Bart Lee Scott MD

Dr. Bart Lee Scott is a board-certified medical oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch. He treats myelodysplastic syndromes and myeloproliferative neoplasms and leads clinical research to improve blood cancer treatments, including stem cell transplant approaches. Bart Scott, M.D., is a board-certified oncologist at SCCA, an assistant member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and a UW assistant professor of Oncology. Dr. Scott’s area of expertise is myelodysplastic syndrome and myeloproliferative disorders. He believes that patients should be the principal decision makers regarding their care. He thinks it is very important to respect the desires and wishes of each individual patient. Dr. Scott earned his M.D. at the UW. His interests include clinical trial development in patients with myeloid malignancies.

Dr. Scott is the director of hematology and hematologic malignancies at Fred Hutch and focuses on both patient care and research. He specializes in treating myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Sometimes referred to as “preleukemia,” MDS refers to a group of disorders in which the bone marrow fails to produce enough healthy blood cells. Treatment for MDS is improving rapidly due to clinical trials, and Dr. Scott is developing multiple treatment protocols for this disease, which affects thousands of people in the U.S. each year. Alongside his research efforts, he emphasizes day‑to‑day patient interactions and received the 2016 Ali Al‑Johani Award for excellence in patient care.

Dr. Scott also specializes in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), a rare group of blood cancers caused by overproduction of red blood cells, white blood cells or platelets. He coordinates care for patients with MPN from around the world and conducts clinical trials of new drug therapies, including pacritinib. His research looks at the genetic mutations that drive MPN to support the development of more targeted treatments with fewer side effects. In addition, Dr. Scott studies ways to improve treatment strategies for patients with MDS and MPN, including new combinations of conditioning regimens used before blood stem cell transplantation.
