Professor De Strooper is being recognised “for distinguished contributions to our fundamental understanding of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and for service as an international leader in basic mechanisms underlying AD as well as Parkinson's disease,” said the AAAS in a statement.

Professor De Strooper is one of 388 researchers to receive the honour this year and is one of four AAAS fellows in Belgium, together with Jean-Christophe Charlier (2013), Guy Smagghe (2011) and Christian Deduve (1985). The 2013 fellows will be recognised on 15 February during the 2014 AAAS Annual Meeting in Chicago and will be formally announced in the 29 November 2013 edition of Science.
