Bart C. Jacobs MD, PhD

Dr. Bart Jacobs completed his PhD and specialized in neurology and immunology at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. His PhD research focused on preceding infections, molecular mimicry, and anti-ganglioside antibodies in the Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). He was a research fellow at the University of Glasgow in the lab of Prof. Hugh J. Willison.

Since 2003, Jacobs has been working at Erasmus MC as a general neurologist with a particular interest in patients with peripheral nerve inflammation, especially GBS and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). He is actively involved in education on nerve inflammation, serving as a board member of the Master’s program in Infection & Immunity and as coordinator of the national AIOS Neurology training days.

Jacobs is employed as a staff consultant at the Department of Neurology and as a staff work group leader at the Department of Immunology at Erasmus MC. In 2015, he was appointed as a full professor in Peripheral Nerve Inflammation at Erasmus MC. In 2025, he received the Alan J. Gebhart Prize for Neuropathy Research from the Peripheral Nerve Society (PNS).

Jacob's scientific research primarily focuses on understanding the immunopathogenesis of GBS and CIDP, exploring patient heterogeneity, and developing more effective treatments. International collaboration is essential for this work, and in 2012, he initiated the International GBS Outcome Study (IGOS).
