Prof Barry O’Reilly graduated from RCSI in 1991 and later moved to London to commence specialist training between 1995 and 2001 in Guy’s and St. Thomas’s Hospitals. During this time he also completed a Doctorate in Medicine research investigating causes of bladder overactivity. He then moved to Melbourne, Australia and was appointed Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with the University of Melbourne in 2003.

He returned to Cork in 2004 to take up a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecology post and set up the Urogynaecology Centre in Cork University Maternity Hospital. He brought together national experts in Urogynaecology and Female Urology in Ireland in order to form the Continence Foundation of Ireland (CFI). As such he was a founding member and first chairman of the CFI and this organisation continues to go from strength to strength representing both professionals and patient’s interests in the field of urinary incontinence and prolapse. As part of this he led and produced a document for HSE entitled the “National Continence Strategy for Ireland – a Ten Year Plan”.

He is a member of the executive board of the European Urogynaecology Association, the Executive Board of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Ireland and a member of the National Clinical Advisory Group responsible for the development of national evidence based guidelines for Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Barry has vast experience in labour ward obstetrics, in particular with women who have previous traumatic childbirth experiences. His philosophy for care is based on the fundamental principal of informed patient choice with an individualised care package for managing each pregnancy. He is committed to providing the highest standard of care during pregnancy and delivery in an understanding manner.
