Prof. Dr. Barbara M. Broker is head of the Department of Immunology at the University Medicine Greifswald. Her scientific interest is focused on infection immunology, especially the multifaceted interplay between Staphylococcus aureus and the adaptive immune system. S. aureus can take on different roles: dangerous pathogen, harmless commensal and even allergen, an intriguing setting for an immunologist.
Having studied medicine and philosophy at the universities of Munster, Wien and Bristol (UK), Barbara Broker moved to the University College and Middlesex Medical School in London as a postdoc to study autoimmune diseases and become an immunologist. She then joined a Max Planck Research Group in Erlangen and later the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg before coming to Greifswald.
