Balaraman (Raman) Kalyanaraman received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Madras, Madras, India, and his M.S. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India. In 1978, he received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL, USA, and postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Environmental Sciences in Research Triangle Park, NC, USA. In 1981, he joined the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, the USA, where he now serves as Chairman and Professor of the Department of Biophysics, and Director of the Free Radical Research Center. He is a Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology, Inc. Raman was the 2001 Recipient of the International EPR Society Silver Medal for Outstanding Research in the Application of EPR in Biology and Medicine, and in 2005, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine. In 2009, Raman was named the Harry R. & Angeline E. Quadracci Professor in Parkinson’s Research. In 2010, he was named an Honorary Professor of Medicine by the School of Medicine, the University of the Republic in Montevideo, Uruguay, for distinguished merit and support of the Department of Biochemistry.

Raman’s research interests are centered on the application of EPR and spin traps in free radical biology, synthesis and reactions of fluorescence probes, nitration/nitrosation and bicarbonate-mediated oxidative reactions in biological systems, and understanding the role of free radicals, nitric oxide, and cyclic nucleotides in signal transduction, proteasomal activation, and apoptosis. Raman serves as an Associate Editor for Free Radical Biology and Medicine.
