Dr. Azriel Perel qualified as MD (1974) and completed his residency in Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the Hadassah Medical Center (Hebrew University) in Jerusalem, Israel. Between 1977 and 1979 he was a Fulbright Fellow and did a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Institute, University of California, San-Francisco, California.

The topic of his research at that time was mechanisms of increased pulmonary microvascular permeability. This fellowship was followed by a clinical critical care fellowship at the University of Florida in Gainesville. In 1985 he did a one- year Visiting Professorship of Critical Care at UC San Diego.

In 1987 Dr. Perel became the Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv. In 1998 he became the first Full Professor of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the Tel Aviv University.

Prof. Perel received a Research Scholarship from the French Ministry of Research and Education and has been a Visiting-Professor at the Hopital Pitié-Salpétrière, Paris, during the year 2004. In 2012 he has completed a 6 months Sabbatical as a Visiting Professor at the Charité hospital in Berlin. Prof Perel has been the Treasurer and Board member of the European Society of Anesthesiologists (1998-2002) and the President of the Israel Society of Anesthesiologists (2005-2011). Prof. Perel has recently retired from the Sheba Medical Center but still works in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit one day a week.
