Ayesha Akbar is a consultant gastroenterologist at St Mark's Hospital and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Her research work at Imperial College London gained her a Ph.D. entitled “Molecular mechanisms of visceral hypersensitivity in the colon.” She has published her research in peer-reviewed journals and presented her work at national and international meetings. She is frequently invited to lecture both on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and to contribute to advisory boards as a key opinion leader. Ayesha studied medicine at the University of Manchester and was awarded an Honours degree. She has an outstanding academic record graduating top of her class and gaining several distinctions and honors along with prestigious prizes.

Ayesha is the national Education Chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and previously held the role of chair of the NGM committee of BSG 2015-2018. This reflects her strong commitment to education and training. She is also actively involved in the management and completed a Kings Fund Senior Leadership course. She is LNC chair for LNWUH NHS trust and Director of the Psychological Medicine Unit at St Mark’s Hospital. She was appointed Research and Development Director for LNWUH Trust in June 2017. She is passionate about patent care and is a HEART ambassador for the trust to ensure patients’ are the focus of all our healthcare activities.
