Prof. Dr. med. Axel Schlitt is a specialist in internal medicine, cardiology, sports medicine, and social medicine, and a Master of Health Administration. After training as a nurse, he studied medicine at Saarland University and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 1991-1997. In 1998 he started as a doctor in an internship in Homburg / Saar. A year later he moved back to Mainz and did his doctorate there in gastroenterology. As a fellow of the German Heart Foundation, he spent a research year at the State University of New York in 2002-2003. In 2005 he completed his further training in internal medicine. Two years later he became a senior physician at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Internal Medicine III in Halle-Wittenberg. Since 2012 he has been the chief physician in the cardiology, pulmonology, and diabetes department at the Paracelsus Harz Clinic in Bad Suderode. In the same year, the University of Halle-Wittenberg appointed him an adjunct professor. He has been the chief physician since 2014.
