Aung Ko Win MBBS, MPH, PhD

Associate Professor Aung Ko Win, MBBS, MPH, PhD, is a Principal Research Fellow and the Deputy Head of the Colorectal Cancer Unit within the Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, and the University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research at the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre. He is a Career Development Fellow (Clinical CDF-1) of the National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia. He is the Graduate Research Training Coordinator of the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He also has an Honorary Research position in the Genetic Medicine and Familial Cancer Clinics at Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Dr Win leads a range of colorectal cancer-related projects as a Principal Investigator of the International MUTYH Consortium (IMC), a Chief Investigator of the International Mismatch Repair Consortium (IMRC) and a key investigator of the NIH-funded Colon Cancer Family Registry (CCFR). Aiming to achieve personalised risk assessment of colorectal cancer for optimising targeted prevention and treatment (Precision Health), his research focuses on determining age-specific cancer risk (penetrance) and risk factors for disease (modifiers) for people with inherited genetic predispositions; investigating risk factors specific to tumour subtypes; and predicting disease risk based on a wide range of personal, genetic and environmental factors. His main research areas include Lynch syndrome, MUTYH-associated polyposis, serrated polyposis, and young-adult colorectal cancer.

Dr Win has achieved several prominent awards throughout his career, including the Winner of 2013 Premier’s Award for Health and Medical Research, and the inaugural 2017 University of Melbourne Award for Excellence in Team-based Research Programs.
