Augusto Schmidt graduated from medical school at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil, when he had his first contact with experimental research working with animal models of congenital defects at Dr. Lourenco Sbragia's laboratory, a pediatric and fetal surgeon. Following medical school, Augusto Schmidt continued in his laboratory as a graduate student where he completed his PhD on the role of retinoic acid in lung vascularization in congenital diaphragmatic hernia before moving to the USA to continue his clinical training. Augusto Schmidt completed his General Pediatrics and Neonatal Medicine Training at Cincinnati Children's Hospital where he was mentored by Drs. Alan Jobe and Suhas Kallapur on his research on the effects of chorioamnionitis on lung and brain development and injury using large animal models. Augusto Schmidt continued at Cincinnati as a research fellow and then as junior faculty continuing his research on antenatal inflammation and antenatal corticosteroids funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Augusto Schmidt moved to the University of Miami in 2018 where he continue to work on the mechanisms of brain and lung injury associated with prenatal inflammation and mechanical ventilation.
