Dr. Athanasios G. Tzioufas received his degree in Medicine from the School of Medicine of the University of Ioannina in 1983, where he also completed his Ph.D. in 1989 and his Board of Rheumatology in 1994. He serves as a Professor of Rheumatology and Immunology in the Clinic and Laboratory of the Pathophysiology Department of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) since 2010 and as a director since 2011. His main interests are the pathogenetic mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases, and particularly Sjogren’s syndrome.

He is a member of numerous scientific committees in Greece and abroad. He is a member of the Editorial Board in 6 peer-reviewed Scientific Journals and more than 30 scientific journals. He has organized numerous scientific meetings, including the 11th International Symposium of Sjogren’s Syndrome (2011), Summer School of Immunology (2010,2012,2014,2016, and 2018), and the Joint Scientific Meeting with John Hopkins University (2010). He also coordinates the joint Rheumatology Academic program of NKUA and he is a member of the Steering Committee of the intradepartmental educational program in Rheumatology. He has published over 300 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and books and has given more than 100 lectures as an invited speaker in scientific conferences and universities in Europe, the USA, Latin America, and the Far East.
