Dr. Bayer is Distinguished Professor of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a Faculty member in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. In a Faculty career spanning more than 30 years, Dr. Bayer has focused on deepening the understanding of infectious diseases. He earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine and did his Internship and Residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, both in Philadelphia, PA. He did his Fellowship in infectious diseases at Harbor-UCLA and post-doctoral research training at the West LAVAMC.

Funded through NIH/NIAID and pharmaceutical sources, Dr. Bayer focuses on the expression of key virulence factors and genes, which enhance the ability of Staphylococcus aureus (e.g. MRSA) to cause infection and resist antibiotics, including host defense peptides.
