Prof. Dr. medical Armin Steffen, senior physician at the clinic for ear, nose, and throat medicine and the ENT sleep laboratory on the Lübeck campus, was awarded the Medal of Merit 2021 of the German Society for Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine, Head and Neck Surgery eV (DGHNO -KHC), Bonn, excellent.

The DGHNO-KHC awarded him the honor for his outstanding commitment to the benefit of the specialist society and the associated diverse activities in important committees and institutions of the health care system, as well as his many years of commitment on the board of the Sleep Medicine Working Group. The laudatory speech during the virtual opening ceremony for the 91st and 92nd annual meeting of the society on May 12 was given by its past president Prof. Dr. medical Stefan K. Plontke, Director of the University Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic in Halle an der Saale.

The award for Prof. Armin Steffen applies in particular to his leadership of the "Hypersalivation" guideline of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF), the interdisciplinary position paper of the DGHNO-KHC on the stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve in obstructive sleep apnea and the introduction of several sleep medicine procedure keys in the International Classification of Procedures in Medicine (OPS) such as sleep endoscopy.
