Arie Franx (1961) trained as an obstetrician/gynecologist. After holding various posts he was appointed at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam in 2019 on the chair of Obstetrics, in particular, the life course approach of fetal development and maternal health, as coordinator of the Mother-Child Center in Sophia Children’s Hospital, and a member of the steering committees Value-Based Health Care and Program Sophia. Within Erasmus MC Sophia Children's Hospital, Arie initiated and co-organized the in-house program Clinical Leadership and Care Redesign. Arie supervised more than 45 Ph.D. students and co-authored over 300 scientific papers and two handbooks. Arie’s h-index is currently 33. His research topics include organization and quality of health care, pregnancy disorders and their relationship with the lifelong health of mothers and babies, and global women’s health.

He works on value-based health care with the Netherlands Federation of University Medical Centers, the Ministry of Health, and the Netherlands Healthcare Institute. He was the chair of the global ICHOM working group developing the standard set Pregnancy and Childbirth. Arie is co-founder and co-chairman of the Linnean Initiative (www.linnean.nl), a nationwide multidisciplinary network aiming to accelerate the implementation of value-based healthcare in the Netherlands.
