April Barnado, MD, MSCI, is a physician-scientist and adult rheumatologist in the VUMC Department of Medicine with a secondary appointment in the Department of Biomedical Informatics. Her clinical interests include systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), autoimmune diseases in pregnancy, and interstitial lung disease in autoimmune diseases.
Dr. Barnado has training and expertise in clinical research in SLE with an interest in repurposing the electronic health record (EHR) to study and impact outcomes in patients with SLE. She developed and validated algorithms to phenotype patients with systemic autoimmune diseases in the EHR. Her current R01 Award will seek to predict which patients with a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) will develop systemic autoimmune disease. This risk model will be deployed in real-time in the EHR to try and reduce the time to diagnosis and treatment for patients with autoimmune diseases.
