Professor Ao graduated from Beijing Medical University in 1988 and has since focused his clinical practice in orthopaedic sports medicine. He is one of the few surgeons first practicing arthroscopy in China and is now a leading expert in sports medicine and arthroscopy in China, with outstanding achievement in both clinical practice and research work. He regularly holds leadership and committee appointments in both national and international professional societies. Among them, he is currently holding the Presidency of Chinese Association of Sports Medicine (CASM) and Chinese Society of Arthroscopy, and was past President of the Asia Arthroscopy Congress (AAC). He is also one of the
founding members of the Asian Cartilage Repair Society (ACRS).
Professor Ao is also the Director of Beijing Key Laboratory of Sports Medicine and leads
research from the lab to the ward in the fields of cartilage repair with tissue engineering
and stem cells-based therapies; distribution and prevention of sports injuries; clinical
outcome evaluation; biomechanical and rehabilitation studies. He has received many
national competitive grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China,
China National Science & Technology Pillar Program, etc. Professor Ao has also received
numerous awards and honors for his outstanding scientific & technological achievement
and contribution to Olympics and national sports teams. The State Council of China has
honored him with the special government allowance. He has published numerous
original papers, books, and chapters in the field of sports medicine, arthroscopy, and
cartilage repair, and is on the editorial board of several journals.
