Antoon Lievens MSc, PhD

Antoon Lievens is a Belgian molecular biologist and statistician. He studied Biotechnology (M.Sc) & Statistical data analysis (Ph.D.) at Ghent University.

His area of expertise is the setup and analysis of DNA amplification-based detection systems (e.g. PCR, qPCR, dPCR, etc), with a focus on the sources of variation in such systems. Lately, he has been more involved in sequencing bases identification systems (eg. NGS, barcoding, etc.).

His early career was spent as a researcher at the Belgian Scientific Institute for Public Health, working in the Biosafety and Biotechnology division. He later joined the JRC in Ispra as a grant holder, working for the Molecular Biology and Genomics unit. Then, he worked as a contract agent in the F4 Unit for Fraud Detection and Prevention, where he contributed to strategies for detecting and preventing fraud in the food chain & illicit consumer products in the European Market. Currently, he works as a method development scientist for BASF.
