Antonio graduated from the University of Malaga in 1994, having completed the BSc (Physio) Honours in Science Degree. In 1996 he gained an MSc in Sports Physiotherapy, and in 1999 an MSc in Manual Therapy and was awarded a PhD in Human Exercise Physiology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Malaga in 2007.

Antonio was recruited to the lecturing staff of the postgraduate course The Chartered of Physiotherapist of Andalusia (Spain) in 2000 and as Head of the Department in the Public Health and Sports Centre of Torremolinos in 1998, before transferring to the newly established Department of Health Sciences of University of Jaen as Senior Lecturer in 2005. During 2009-10 a postdoctoral research fellowship in Roehampton-London University with a competitive grant from the Spain Government about integrations of biomechanics with physiology in human movement. He is particularly interested in developing new tools for assessment and clinical monitoring incorporating biomechanics, physiology, and psychometrics with a clinimetric approach ICT-based solution in public health.

At the present day is a Professor and Chief Investigator of Clinometric at the University of Malaga, Spain. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the School of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Health at the Queensland University of Technology, Australia.

Antonio has taught in different universities in Europe and supervised 28 Ph.D. He currently participates in the Spanish NHRMC Grant for four European projects and (RISE, H2020, AAL, EULAR) and a European Union COST Network. He has published more than 230 peer-reviewed scientific articles with a cumulative impact of over 700 Journal Citation Reports and participated in raising more than €12 million in research funding.
