Anton Fries joined the Royal Navy in 2000 whilst a medical student at Jesus College, Cambridge. Having won his Green Beret he served as Medical Officer to 42 Commando Royal Marines, seeing service on two tours of Afghanistan as well as deployments to the Arctic, the Indian Himalayas, and onboard HMS MONTROSE.
His surgical training was in the West Midlands and South West Deaneries in the UK, as well as in South Africa, the USA, and Taiwan. He completed his Vascularised Composite Allotransplantation research in San Antonio, Texas and the 1-year microsurgical fellowship in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. He was awarded the MSc in Microsurgical Reconstruction from Chang Gung University, Taipei. Since 2014 he has worked for a surgical charity in Manila.
In 2018 he was appointed Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust specializing in trauma, sarcoma and hand reconstruction, and Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation.
