Anthony S. Wierzbicki DM, DPhil, FRCPath

Professor Anthony Wierzbicki trained at the University of Cambridge and attended clinical school in Oxford. He qualified in 1986. He specialised in chemical pathology being appointed to the National Hospital for Neurology (Queen Square) where he developed an interest in the neurochemistry of metabolic disease. He was awarded a MRC fellowship to study the molecular biology of calcium channels involved in Lambert-Eaton syndrome at the Institute of Molecular Medicine in Oxford . He completed his training at the University Hospital Cardiff and at Imperial College where he turned his knowledge of metabolic syndromes to cardiology and lipids. He was appointed senior lecturer in chemical pathology and director of the lipid unit at Guy’s & St, Thomas' Hospitals in 1995 transferring to the NHS in 2005. His work in the field of atherosclerosis, comprises more than 380 publications. He is a Fellow of National Association of Clinical Biochemistry (USA) and the American Heart Association. He was chair of medical committee and a Trustee of HEART-UK (cholesterol charity). At NICE he was a member of the Technology Appraisal (TA) committees (2009-13), Highly Specialised (orphan disease) therapies TA committee (2013-15), a clinical advisor on individual TAs, and a member of the Familial Hypercholesterolaemia guideline CG71 (2008-9). He chaired the NICE Lipids and Cardiovascular Risk (CG181; 2013-2014); Chronic Cardiac Failure (NG106; 2016-2018) , Hypertension (2017-19) and Chronic Renal disease guidelines (2018-) . He is cardiovascular editor for the International Journal of Clinical Practice. His research interests are in the relationship of lipids to atherosclerosis, the role of lipids in peroxisomal and neurological disease and in biochemical and genetic diagnostics.
