Anthony R. AbsalomMBChB, FRCA, MD
Anthony Absalom studied medicine at the University of Cape Town. He trained as an anaesthetist and intensivist in England and Scotland. He received an academic training in Glasgow, where he worked with Prof Gavin Kenny on target-controlled delivery of anesthetic agents, and on closed loop computer controlled anaesthetic delivery, using the BIS (an EEG parameter) as the control variable. His primary research interests include the neurosciences and the pharmacology of the anaesthetic agents.
Before moving to Groningen, he was involved in several fMRI studies on the neural correlates of the cognitive changes associated with low dose administration of the anesthetic agents propofol and ketamine. The propofol studies concentrated on speech processing and memory, whereas the ketamine studies concentrated on psychotic effects.
