Dr. Anthony Oliveri completed his doctoral work in pharmacology and toxicology at Duke University with a focus on environmental neurotoxicology, during which time he developed assays in animal models that quantified behavioral consequences of exposures to environmental contaminants, including organophosphate flame retardants. He went on to obtain his Master of Public Health in Exposure Science-Industrial Hygiene from the University of Michigan School of Public Health before joining the Department of Medicine at MSU in the spring of 2018.
Dr. Oliveri’s primary area of research interest is in the assessment of exposures to hazardous chemicals used or present in occupational settings, which integrates his educational background and training. He aims to characterize both the exposures themselves and their resultant health effects on workers or on others (as with take-home lead exposures and workers’ children).
Dr. Oliveri is also concerned with developing surveillance and outreach tools for occupational health. This includes tracking occupational fatalities statewide, the assessment of root causes, and the dissemination of recommendations to help prevent similar incidents in the future. He is also involved in projects that provide health and safety training and services to farmers across the state.
