Dr. Shackelford has been a perfusionist for over 29 years and has worked in a variety of healthcare settings. He is currently the Chief Perfusionist at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) since 2013. Received Doctorate in Health Administration in 2009. His core interests and strengths are in Strategic Planning and Operations Management, Operating Room Design (specifically Cardiac Operating Rooms), Quality Assurance/Improvement and most importantly improving patient safety via human factor analysis. Prior to 2013, along with clinically practicing, he was an active Assistant Professor for 11 years at MUSC's Perfusion School, didactically and clinically teaching and conducting research.

He actively served on the College of Health Professions' various committees and served as President of Faculty Assembly in 2011-2012. For 3 years taught as an adjunct assistant professor at the College Health Professions, teaching the Foundations in Leadership for Doctor of Health Administration course - Interprofessional Studies Program. His Specialties are Adult Cardiopulmonary Perfusion, Ventricular Assist Devices, ECMO (Neonatal/Adult - pioneering work on staffing models), Liver Transplantation, Health Administration - Leadership and Management, Strategic Planning, Quality Assurance / Improvement, Strategic Operations
