Anthony Coates BSc, FRCP, MD, FRCPath

Professor Coates graduated in medicine at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. He was awarded a Medical Research Council Research Training Fellowship under the supervision of Professor Denny Mitchison at the Medical Research Council's TB unit. Prof Mitchison’s group and MRC were the first to undertake randomised clinical trials. During his Fellowship, Prof Coates developed the first set of monoclonal antibodies against mycobacterium tuberculosis. He gained his MD on the basis of this work.
He was appointed Senior Lecturer at the London Hospital Medical School (now Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry) under Professor JD Williams, whose main research interest was antibiotic resistance. At the London, Professor Coates was a consultant to Celltech Ltd. In addition he held a number of grants from National Institutes of Health, MRC, European Commission, and the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council (ARC), now Arthritis Research UK.
