Dr. Anne Pereira, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P., has been named assistant dean for clinical education. She is the current program director of the internal medicine residency program at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), serves as co-program director of the combined emergency medicine/internal medicine residency program, and assists the Department of Medicine as its assistant chief for education and faculty development. She will transition out of her HCMC leadership commitments this summer and begin her new role at the University of Minnesota Medical School on August 4, 2014. Dr. Pereira will continue to see patients at HCMC one day per week.
The position of assistant dean for clinical education was developed recently by the Office of Medical Education to address the training and transitional gaps between medical education and clinical practice, which has been impacted by the ongoing transformation of healthcare. Dr. Pereira will be the first person in our Medical School to occupy this role.
“Anne stands out as a thoughtful and experienced medical leader, uniquely positioned to handle this important work,” says vice dean for education Mark Rosenberg. “Her point of view and experience as a team leader, collaborator, and scholar were right for us in this moment to help guide our institution through the next phase of our medical curriculum.”
Dr. Pereira looks forward to collaborating with our medical leadership team and faculty to further integrate areas such as public health, quality improvement, and interprofessional education into our clinical curriculum, and finding new opportunities for clinical experience across all four years of medical school.
“The work is critically important for our state,” says Dr. Pereira. “Because our institution trains 70% of Minnesota’s physicians, it’s a top priority that our students have the quickest possible transition period from trainee to integral partner in a professional clinical environment – thinking critically to solve patient issues and working effectively in teams to offer the best possible care.”
Dr. Pereira serves on the Board of Directors for Hennepin Healthcare System, a role she has held since 2011, and an experience she says has offered her a valuable perspective on patient care.
“It was fundamentally important for me to learn about the challenges of delivering a quality clinical experience, from the safety and patient experience side of things, while also operating as a teaching facility,” Dr. Pereira explains.
After completing her M.D. degree at the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1995, Dr. Pereira also completed a M.P.H., focusing on clinical effectiveness, while conducting her general internal medicine fellowship at Harvard Medical School. This gave her a heightened appreciation for population health and social determinants of health, and also for assessing outcomes.
The scholarly aspect of medicine, and disseminating new knowledge, is something Dr. Pereira values greatly. Part of her experience includes working collaboratively across institutions on the Educational Innovation Project through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), a project that informed the development of the Next Accreditation System. She looks forward to examining issues and sharing best practices learned in this new role.
