Dr. Goldberg received her M.D. from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1977. She completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. In 1983, she joined the faculty of Washington University. She is a member of the American College of Physicians, Alpha Omega Alpha, American Heart Association, the Endocrine Society, American Diabetes Association, and the National Lipid Association. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American Heart Association. She has been listed for several years in Best Doctors in America. Dr. Goldberg is a member of the American Board of Clinical Lipidology. She is the President of the National Lipid Association (2007-2008).

Dr. Goldberg has participated in numerous clinical trials involving the use of lipid-modifying agents, including the Lipid Research Clinics Coronary Primary Prevention Trial which was one of the first to show that lowering blood cholesterol levels decreases the risk of coronary artery disease. Other work has focused on studies of the effects on lipids and lipoproteins of diet, soluble fiber, and a variety of drugs with different mechanisms of action. Drug classes studied include bile acid sequestrant resins, nicotinic acid, HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, cholesterol absorption inhibitors, and fabric acid derivatives as well as novel lipid-lowering agents. Her clinical research has included Phase 2 through Phase 4 studies as well as outcome studies.
