Cattaneo is the Head of the Biological Psychiatry Laboratory at the IRCCS Fatebenefratelli Institute in Brescia, Italy and she also has a joint position as a senior researcher at the King's College London, Institute of Psychiatry. Her research is mainly focused on the role of inflammation and the immune system in the pathogenesis and in the treatment of psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.

She is leading different projects, both in animals and in humans aimed at understanding the epigenetic mechanisms and of the gut microbiota as possible regulators of persistence of enhanced inflammation both at the central level and in the periphery. She is a member of different scientific societies and she is receiving as PI of grants from Italian Agencies (Ministry of Health), from the European Union (ERANET and H2020), and as coSPI with Prof Carmine Pariante in several grants such as Psychiatric Research Trust Grant to investigate the effect of childhood trauma on inflammation, and the UK Medical Research Council Grant to investigate the immune system and inflammatory system in the mechanisms associated with the response to antidepressant drugs.
