Dr. Ann L. Gruber-Baldini, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she serves as Director of the Graduate Program in Epidemiology and Human Genetics and Co-Director of the UMB/UMBC Doctoral Program in Gerontology. She holds a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from Bucknell University, an M.S. and PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University, and completed a National Institute on Aging postdoctoral traineeship at the Institute of Gerontology, University of Michigan.
Dr. Gruber-Baldini’s research spans more than three decades and focuses on psycho-social factors in aging and chronic disease, including cognitive functioning and decline (normal aging, delirium, and dementia), Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, hip fracture recovery and rehabilitation, Parkinson’s disease, patient-reported outcomes, functional status, and health-related quality of life. She has provided methodological leadership, data management, and statistical oversight for large longitudinal studies such as the Baltimore Hip Studies, Maryland Long-Term Care Projects, and the Movement Disorders Center HOME Study.
Her work includes both investigator-initiated and collaborative research funded by NIH and other agencies, including projects examining cognitive thresholds for reliable patient-reported outcomes, intervention studies for older adults living with HIV, and behavioral approaches to support health and social engagement in aging populations. Dr. Gruber-Baldini teaches courses in Psychology of Aging and Epidemiology of Aging, and leads a T32 training grant in the epidemiology of aging, contributing to the education and mentorship of the next generation of aging researchers. She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and a founding member of the American Delirium Society.
