Prof. Dr. Ann De Guchtenaere is a senior pediatrician and specialist in general pediatrics at UZ Gent (Ghent University Hospital) in Belgium, where she practices on the Specialised Pediatric Department and serves as medical coordinator of the Down Syndrome Clinic (Downpoli). She is recognized for her expertise in the care of children with chronic and non-communicable conditions, integrated child and adolescent health care, and developmental support. Dr. De Guchtenaere earned her Master’s degree in Medicine (2001) and completed her specialization in Pediatrics (2005) at Ghent University (UGent). She completed her doctoral research in 2011, focusing on nocturnal enuresis and translational approaches from pathophysiology to treatment strategies.
Her career includes roles as a pediatric staff member at UZ Gent (2005–2012), Head Physician of the Zeepreventorium Medical Pediatric Rehabilitation Center for chronically ill children (2012–2020), and general pediatrician at AZ Damiaan Oostende before returning to UZ Gent in 2023. Prof. De Guchtenaere’s clinical interests span a wide range of pediatric health priorities, including Down syndrome, chronic pain, morbid obesity, medical rehabilitation of children with chronic conditions, trauma-sensitive care, and transitional care from pediatric to adult services. She is also engaged in improving integrated pediatric and youth care at national and European levels.
In addition to her clinical work, she is an active contributor to pediatric science and policy. She serves as President of the Belgian Academy of Pediatrics (BAOP), National Delegate and Secretary General of the European Academy of Pediatrics (EAP), and holds leadership positions in several professional pediatric organizations, including the Flemish Association for Pediatrics (VVK) and the Belgian Society of Pediatrics (BVK). She also contributes as a review editor for Frontiers in Pediatrics. Prof. De Guchtenaere’s scholarly work includes publications on child health, chronic disease, and advocacy for pediatric care standards, reflecting her commitment to evidence-based practice, child rights, and multidisciplinary approaches to health.
