Angela Carvalho graduated in Biomedical Engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP) and obtained her Master's Degree at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), initiating her research activities in 2012 at INEB. She later obtained her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at FEUP in 2018 (Cum Laude). As a Postdoc at i3S, she launched a new research line in cancer precision medicine within her group, having coordinated a project developed in collaboration with IPO-Porto and funded by FCT (TRIMARKCHIP).

The focus was on liquid biopsies, specifically the development of novel microfluidic platforms for the detection and isolation of circulating tumour biomarkers for lung cancer management. Main outputs include the identification of novel biomarkers in lung cancer circulating tumor cells (patent application: PT 119401). She has authored and co-authored 27 peer-reviewed publications, with 441 citations and an h-index of 12. Has supervised/currently supervises 9 students (1 BSc, 6 MSc, and 2 PhD candidates) and has mentored 8 students (including 4 PhD students). Participation in projects includes 8 national and international projects, establishing collaborations with 12 national and international teams, with over 70 co-authors.

Science outreach activities involve participation in the school's programs, fundraising activities, scientific committees for conferences, and lectures. Having a high focus on the translation of research into health-improving products, she transitioned to a role in technology transfer as the project manager of RESOLVE-Health 2.0, an acceleration program to boost technology transfer and value creation in health. In the role, she supported entrepreneurs and startups to navigate technology transfer and product and market validation. Currently, she is co-founder & CEO of BEAT Therapeutics, a biotech startup working towards developing first-in-class targeted therapies to fight the most challenging and resistant forms of cancer. Has received several distinctions related to entrepreneurship and innovation, including the Women TechEU award.
