Andries van der Meer has a Master's degree in Medical Biology from the University of Groningen, and he received his Ph.D. in 2010 on the thesis 'Microfluidic Technology in Vascular Research: The Endothelial Response to Shear Stress', carried out under supervision of prof. dr. Jan Feijen and prof. dr. István Vermes of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Twente. Between 2010 and 2015, dr. Van der Meer trained as a Post-Doctoral Fellow and later as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Twente in the group of prof. dr. Albert van den Berg, and at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering of Harvard University in the group of Don Ingber, M.D., Ph.D.

In 2015, dr. Van der Meer joined the University of Twente as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in the department of Applied Stem Cell Technologies. He coordinates the University of Twente Strategic Research Orientation ‘Organs-on-Chips’, he is the university representative for the hDMT Organ-on-Chip Consortium, and he heads his own research group in which he focuses on developing innovative organs-on-chips for application in the fields of vascular biology and thrombosis.
