Andrew W. Murray, M.D., is a board-certified anesthesiologist and perioperative echocardiographer at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. He specializes in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, heart and lung transplantation, transesophageal echocardiography, mechanical circulatory support, and medical simulation.

Dr. Murray earned his MB ChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. He completed a rotating internship at Tygerberg Hospital before pursuing residency training in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is board certified in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology and holds Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography certification from the National Board of Echocardiography.

At Mayo Clinic, Dr. Murray provides specialized anesthetic care for patients undergoing complex cardiovascular and thoracic procedures, including heart transplantation, lung transplantation, implantation of mechanical circulatory support devices, and advanced transesophageal echocardiographic imaging. His clinical interests include perioperative echocardiography, cardiac assist devices, transplantation, and simulation-based medical education.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Murray serves as Chair of the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. He is actively involved in resident education, curriculum development, quality improvement, and equipment planning. Earlier in his career, he held several leadership positions at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, directing perioperative echocardiography services, bronchoscopy training programs, and simulation-based crisis leadership education.

Dr. Murray is an accomplished researcher with numerous peer-reviewed publications focusing on cardiothoracic anesthesia, lung transplantation, perioperative echocardiography, patient safety, pulmonary hypertension, surgical blood loss, and infection prevention. His research has contributed to advancing evidence-based perioperative care for patients undergoing complex cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.

A Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography, Dr. Murray has received multiple honors for excellence in teaching and clinical practice, including the Outstanding Clinical Teacher Award from the University of Pittsburgh. Through his leadership, education, research, and patient care, he continues to advance the field of cardiothoracic anesthesiology and improve outcomes for patients requiring highly specialized surgical care.
