Dr. Tomaras is a Senior Principal Scientist in the Biotherapeutics Division at Pfizer Worldwide Research and Development in Cambridge Massachusetts. He received his BA and PhD degrees from the Department of Microbiology at Miami University in 2000 and 2004 respectively. His graduate research focused on developing novel genetic tools to identify and characterize the cellular components required for biofilm formation by Acinetobacter baumannii. His subsequent postdoctoral research was conducted at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center where he studied the contributions of the twin-arginine-translocase (TAT) secretion system to the pathogenesis of the Category A select agent pathogens Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei.
He joined the Antibacterials Research Unit at Pfizer in 2008 where his responsibilities included the assessment of resistance potential for all Gram-negative preclinical programs as well as the development of new screening approaches for the discovery of novel antibacterial targets and pathways. Since 2011 he has been a member of the Endogenous Human Biologic Response group within the Biotherapeutics Division where he focuses on target identification and subsequent functional characterization of human monoclonal antibodies that target multidrug resistant ESKAPE pathogens.
