Andrew Mahony is an Infectious Diseases physician at Austin Health, Melbourne, with primary responsibility for antimicrobial stewardship along with a team of pharmacists. He has a specific interest in the epidemiology and management of vancomycin-resistant enterococci, with ongoing PhD studies at the University of Melbourne, which has included research into the effectiveness of bleach cleaning and monitoring of environmental contamination.

He is also the lead physician for the Austin’s intravenous cannulation accreditation program introduced in 2013 that has been associated with a significant reduction in nosocomial Staph aureus bloodstream infection. The Austin has a longstanding antimicrobial stewardship program that has been embedded into its electronic prescribing system over the past five years, which will be the subject of his presentation.
