Andrew Barton works at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust where he is corporately responsible for all IV therapy and Vascular Access governance and practice. His clinical role is as a Nurse Consultant in vascular access and IV therapy. He lead a team cross-site for vascular access services which includes insertion of PICC, ultrasound cannulation, midlines, tunneled cuffed catheters, renal catheters, and implanted port insertion. He is also the founder and lead nurse for our Intravenous and Vascular Access Services (IVAS) unit where he manages a team of 12 infusion specialist staff who provide same-day IV infusions and other IV therapies in an outpatient setting.
He is an experienced national and international speaker and has published extensively in scientific and research journals in the field of vascular access and IV therapy. He has a special interest in vascular access technology and is an early adopter of new concepts technology including infrared vein location, biphasic vein amplification, PICC placement, and catheter securement. Locally he is the chair of the Trusts product selection group and sits on the hospital Infection control committee, patient safety committee, nutritional steering group, and clinical education group.
Nationally he is the chair of NIVAS the national infusion and vascular access society of the UK, he is a board member of MEDUSA the national electronic injectable medicines guide, and a global committee member of the World Congress of Vascular Access, he is an expert advisor for the health technologies evaluation program for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and an independent consultant for MHRA. He frequently participates in numerous focus and strategy groups in the field of vascular access and IV therapy.
