Dr. Andrei Fagarasanu is an Associate Clinical Professor in Hematology at the University of Alberta. He graduated from Carol Davila Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania, one of the largest and oldest institutions of its kind in Eastern Europe. Subsequently, he obtained a PhD in Cell Biology at the University of Alberta during which time he investigated molecular pathways governing intracellular organelle trafficking. He undertook clinical training in Internal Medicine and Hematology at the University of Alberta.
His career has developed along multiple lines of interest including chronic lymphocytic leukemia, hairy cell leukemia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemias, and thrombosis. He is currently leading one of the two centers of excellence in hairy cell leukemia treatment in Canada. He published numerous papers in prestigious peer-reviewed journals such as Nature Cell Biology, Developmental Cell, and Journal of Cell Biology. His publications have collectively been cited more than 1500 times. He received numerous research and teaching awards and currently works at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, University of Alberta Hospital, and Cross Cancer Institute.
