Professor Ana G. Almeida graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon University and did her Cardiology fellowship at Santa Maria University Hospital in Lisbon. She obtained her PhD degree at the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon University, where she has the present position of Associate Professor (with Aggregation) of Cardiology. Professor Ana G. Almeida is currently a Senior Consultant Cardiologist and the Head of the Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) Laboratories as well as the Coordinator of the Non-Invasive Imaging Unit at the Cardiology Department of Santa Maria University Hospital (Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Norte) in Lisbon. She is the Scientific Secretary of the research Cardiovascular Centre of the Lisbon University (Scientific Coordinator Prof. Fausto Pinto).
Prof. Ana Almeida is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) since 2008. Since 2012, she is a member of the Board of the European CMR Exam Certification (CMR Section EACVI). She was a member of the Board of the ESC Working Group of CMR, from 2007-2011 (ex-officio from 2004-2007), and was the Chair of the Working Group of Nuclear Cardiology, CMR & Cardiac CT of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology, from 2009-2013.
Echocardiography and CMR have been her main tools for research. Besides being the pioneer in contrast echocardiography in Portugal, her interests are also 3D and TEE. She was a pioneer in CMR in Portugal, starting this modality 20 years ago, after fellowships at the Texas University in Dallas, USA, and at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, UK. In 2008, obtained training in cardiac CT at Leuven University.
Prof. Ana Almeida has been responsible for post-graduate training, course organizations, and undergraduate teaching courses in cardiovascular imaging (echocardiography, CMR and CT). She has been the scientific coordinator and/or principal investigator of national and international research projects and direct supervisor of MSc. and PhD.
