Dr. Ammar Almehmi is a Professor of Medicine & Radiology at UAB who is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology. Further, he is certified in Hemodialysis Vascular Access and Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter management by the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology (ASDIN).

Dr. Almehmi is a clinician, academician, researcher, and educator. During his fellowship at Kansas University, he spent one year as a T32-NIH nephrology research fellow; then he was awarded the prestigious NKF research fellowship grant. Moreover, due to his leadership skills, Dr. Ammar was selected as the Chief Fellow in Nephology. Owning to his scholarly activities and clinical skills, he was granted -for the first time in the history of the Interventional Nephrology program- the “Outstanding Fellow Award”.

Dr. Almehmi is known for his mastery in performing the different hemodialysis vascular access procedures including, but not limited to, access ultrasound, vein mapping, graft/fistula angiogram and angioplasty, balloon-assisted maturation (BAM) of immature fistulas, access thrombectomy, stenting, hemodialysis catheter insertion, replacement, and removal. Moreover, Dr. Almehmi has solid experience in managing the peritoneal catheter (insertion, removal, and repositioning). Over the last few years, he performed more than 14000 procedures.

In addition to his doctorate in medicine (MD) from the University of Aleppo, Dr. Ammar Almehmi holds a master’s degree in public health (MPH) from West Virginia University. Most recently, Dr. Almehmi was the driving force of obtaining the ASDIN accreditation to the University Vascular Access Center to become one of only five academic nephrology programs that are accredited for training in Interventional Nephrology. Currently, Dr. Almehmi serves as Professor of Medicine and Radiology at UAB. He is the director of the interventional Nephrology program.
