Professor Dr. Ambros J. Beer is Professor and Chair of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Ulm University Hospital in Ulm, Germany since 2014. He graduated from medical school at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich in 1999 and completed his PhD thesis in the same year at the Institute for Radiation Biology. He then undertook specialist clinical training in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) at Munich and completed his board exams in Radiology in 2006 and Nuclear Medicine in 2009. Since 2007 he was assistant professor for nuclear medicine at the Department of Nuclear Medicine at TUM (Chair: Prof. Dr. Markus Schwaiger) and worked there as consultant from 2009 – 2014. In 2014 he moved to Ulm as chair and director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Ulm University.
His main research area is multimodality imaging for non-invasive characterisation of tissue biology by multiparametric imaging, with the aim of improving non-invasive evaluation of disease characteristics in oncology, neurology or inflammatory diseases. After the introduction of the worldwide first whole-body hybrid PET/MR scanner at TUM in 2010 he did extensive research on this exciting novel hybrid imaging technique. Now at Ulm University, the research on multiparametric imaging preclinically and clinically continues, with a focus on oncology and also on imaging in neurodegenerative diseases.
