Dr. Cabalka received her BS degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982 and her MD (Alpha Omega Alpha) from the University of Minnesota in 1986. She then completed her pediatric residency at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI, and pediatric cardiology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, TX. She was a member of the Children's Heart Clinic practice at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis from 1992 until 1999, when she joined the Mayo Clinic department of Pediatric Cardiology. Her primary areas of interest are congenital interventional cardiac catheterization, structural heart disease and intervention, and congenital echocardiography.

She is a member of the Steering Committee for the IMPACT registry (NCDR). She is the primary investigator at Mayo Clinic for the US Melody Post-Approval Study, the Harmony Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Pivotal Trial, and served as the national investigator for the Melody Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve in Patients with a Dysfunctional Bioprosthetic Valve in the Pulmonary Position.
