Allen J. Aksamit Jr., MD, is a neurologist and Professor of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, internationally recognized for his expertise in neuroinfectious diseases, neuroimmunology, and inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system. He has devoted much of his career to the diagnosis and treatment of complex neurological infections and immune-mediated neurologic conditions, with a particular focus on progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), HIV-related neurological disorders, and central nervous system inflammatory diseases.
Dr. Aksamit earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and completed his neurology residency and fellowship training at Mayo Clinic, where he later joined the faculty. Over the years, he has played a major role in advancing Mayo Clinic’s clinical and research programs in neuroinfectious diseases and autoimmune neurology.
His research contributions have centered on opportunistic infections of the nervous system, neurologic complications of immunosuppressive therapies, viral infections affecting the brain and spinal cord, and immune-mediated neurological disorders. Dr. Aksamit has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and educational resources that have helped shape clinical understanding and management of neuroinfectious conditions worldwide.
In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr. Aksamit is highly regarded as a medical educator and mentor, contributing extensively to neurology training programs and professional societies. Through his work at Mayo Clinic, he continues to support multidisciplinary approaches to complex neurological disease management while advancing patient care, education, and neuroscience research.
