Dr. Schwartz was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and graduated from Central High School with Barnwell Honors. He received his BS degree from Temple University School of Pharmacy, graduating second in his class as a member of the Rho Chi Honor Society. Dr. Schwartz received his MD degree from Hahnemann University College of Medicine, graduating third in his class with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He completed his medicine internship at Albert Einstein Medical Center and his residency in medicine at Hahnemann University Hospital. Dr. Schwartz was awarded an NIH research fellowship in nephrology.

Following training, Dr. Schwartz served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at the rank of major at Letterman Army Institute of Research in San Francisco, Calif. He began his university faculty experience as instructor in medicine and nephrology at the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Schwartz moved to Philadelphia to join the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Hahnemann University School of Medicine, where he established the animal hypertension research laboratory as well as the human hypertension laboratory. Dr. Schwartz served as chief of nephrology and hypertension and director of dialysis at the former Philadelphia General Hospital.
