Dr. Aliya Khan is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Geriatrics at McMaster University, where she also serves as Director of the Calcium Disorders Clinic and Director of the Fellowship in Metabolic Bone Disease. She graduated with honors from the University of Ottawa Medical School and completed training in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, and Endocrinology, followed by a fellowship in Metabolic Bone Disease at the University of Toronto.
A clinician–researcher of international distinction, Dr. Khan has published more than 400 scientific papers, along with numerous book chapters and textbooks, primarily focused on osteoporosis and parathyroid disease. She has led the development of multiple global and national clinical guidelines, including international guidelines for parathyroid disease, osteonecrosis of the jaw, diagnostic criteria for hypophosphatasia, treatment guidelines for X-linked hypophosphatemia, and Canadian osteoporosis guidelines. She also serves as co-chair for international best practice recommendations on bone mineral density reporting, supported by 10 global scientific societies, including ISCD, IOF, and the Radiological Society of North America.
Dr. Khan is the principal investigator in clinical trials evaluating novel therapies for parathyroid and calcium disorders, including PTH and PTH analogues, PTH1 receptor agonists for hypoparathyroidism, calcilytics for autosomal dominant hypocalcemia, and medical therapies for primary hyperparathyroidism.
Her contributions have been recognized with numerous national and international honors, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, the International Hypoparathyroidism Award, the International Osteoporosis Foundation Award for Publishing Excellence, and recognition from Osteoporosis Canada for outstanding contributions to research and education. In 2024, she received the American College of Physicians Woman Physician of the Year Award and the ACP Humanitarian of the Year Award. She was also honored with the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism Dr. Jacques Genest Lecture Award and the ORTOMED Medal from the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Medicine for her contributions to metabolic bone disease. Dr. Khan is recognized by Expertscape as being among the top 0.1% of global experts in hyperparathyroidism.
