Pre Alexa Martin-Storey works to understand why and how social injustices lead to different outcomes for different people. As a member of the LGBTQ community, she has seen first-hand that some people face adversity and develop through the complex interplay between their own characteristics and the circumstances in which they evolve. This interest led her to pursue a doctorate in developmental psychology, as adolescence and emerging adulthood seemed to be crucial milestones for LGBTQ people, as well as many other individuals. His research is based on two main questions: (1) How does the underlying injustice in our society lead some individuals to experience disproportionately higher levels of stress than others (such as discrimination, socioeconomic disadvantage, peer victimization, social exclusion)? and (2) How do children's and adolescents' responses to experiences influence their mental health and academic success. Prof. Martin-Storey holds the Canada Research Chair in Stigma and Psychosocial Development and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychoeducation at the Université de Sherbrooke. She completed a Postdoctorate (Population Research Center) at The University of Texas at Austin, and a doctorate in psychology at Concordia University.
