Alex Shcheglovitov, Ph.D. an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the University of Utah. Shcheglovitov lab studies human cortical development and disorders associated with autism, intellectual disability, and epilepsy. In our studies, we use human pluripotent stem cells and stem cell derived-neurons and organoids.

We identified the cellular and molecular deficits caused by SHANK3 deficiency in stem cell derived-neurons from Phelan-McDermid syndrome patients and CRISPR/Cas9- engineered lines with hemizygous SHANK3 deletion. Our research's ultimate goal is to obtain novel insights into the cellular and molecular mechanisms disrupted by specific genetic abnormalities to inform the development of effective therapies for patients.
