Alessio Michele Goffredo Aghemo, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Gastroenterology at Humanitas University in Milan, Italy, and serves as Director of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Deputy Rector for Education, and Head of the Division of Internal Medicine and Hepatology at Humanitas Research Hospital. He is internationally recognized for his contributions to hepatology, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, metabolic liver disease, and liver disease management.

Dr. Aghemo earned his medical degree, specialty training in Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy, and PhD in Gastroenterology from the University of Milan. Throughout his career, he has combined clinical excellence with academic leadership, becoming one of Europe's leading experts in chronic liver diseases and antiviral therapies.

His research focuses on the natural history and treatment of viral hepatitis, optimization of antiviral therapies, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD/NAFLD), and the prevention and management of cirrhosis complications. He has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed scientific publications and has contributed extensively to international treatment guidelines for hepatitis C and other liver diseases.

Dr. Aghemo has held numerous leadership positions within major professional organizations, including the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), United European Gastroenterology (UEG), and the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF). He also served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Liver International and has been actively involved in shaping international standards of care in hepatology.
