Dr. Alessia Cavazza, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, University College London, where she leads research in gene and cell therapy with a focus on genome editing approaches for inherited blood and immune disorders. Her work centers on developing safer and more effective therapeutic strategies using CRISPR-based technologies and hematopoietic stem cell engineering.
Dr. Cavazza’s research explores gene correction and epigenome editing for primary immunodeficiencies and hematological diseases, including Wiskott–Aldrich syndrome and X-linked agammaglobulinemia. She has contributed to advancing ex vivo gene editing platforms, stem cell manipulation techniques, and translational approaches aimed at improving clinical outcomes in genetic diseases.
Before joining UCL, she conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where she investigated transcriptional regulation, stem cell biology, and cancer-related pathways. Earlier in her career, she trained in Italy at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, building expertise in molecular genetics, epigenetics, and retroviral vector biology.
Dr. Cavazza has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in the fields of genome editing, stem cell biology, and translational medicine. She is actively involved in international collaborations focused on accelerating the safe clinical application of gene-editing technologies for human disease.
