Alan Robert Dimick

Dr. Dimick was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended public schools and Birmingham Southern College, graduating in 1953. He received his MD from the University Of Alabama School Of Medicine in 1958 and did a straight medical internship and general surgery residency at the University of Alabama Hospitals.
Upon finishing his residency in 1963, he joined the faculty of the Department of Surgery at the UASOM. The Chairman of the Department, Dr. Champ Lyons, immediately gave him the two assignments that were to inspire his life-long commitments. One was to combine the two emergency rooms of the University Hospital (one for blacks and the other for whites) into one emergency department. This occurred during the civil rights strife in Birmingham in 1963, when martial law was declared for several weeks because of bombings and riots. The other assignment was to learn more about burn care. This led to his attending the fourth National Burn Seminar in 1963 in Galveston, Texas and by 1967 he was hosting the eighth National Burn Seminar in Birmingham, the meeting at which the American Burn Association (ABA) was formed.
Dr. Dimick has held many offices in the ABA. He was secretary from 1972 to 1975 and President in 1977-78, when he hosted the tenth annual ABA meeting in Birmingham. He was chair of the Federal Issues (later renamed Government Affairs) Committee from 1984 to 1994 and a member of the ABLS Advisory Committee from 1987 to 2004. He has been a member of the Verification Committee since 1996.
