Alan Fraser qualified in medicine from the University of Edinburgh and completed his clinical training in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Cardiff in the UK. He was British Heart Foundation Research Fellow at the Erasmus University Hospital in Rotterdam, before being appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom. He is now a Professor of Cardiology at Cardiff University and Visiting Professor in the Research Group on Cardiovascular Imaging and Dynamics, in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases of the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He had a sabbatical fellowship in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and he has an honorary Doctorate from the Carol Davila Medical University, Bucharest.

He was President of the European Association of Echocardiography and later a Board member and then Vice-President for External Affairs of the European Society of Cardiology. He is currently Chairman of the Committee on Medical Devices of the European Society of Cardiology and a member of their European Affairs Committee.

He represents the ESC at the Medical Device Experts Group (MDEG) and he is a member of the committee on Clinical Investigation and Evaluation (CIE), both for the Medical Devices Unit of the European Commission in Brussels. His clinical research interests include the early diagnosis of heart muscle disease, the pathophysiology of heart failure, quantitative stress echocardiography, and heart valve disease.
